The beautiful crescent–shaped country of Croatia, with almost 6000 kilometres of coastline including thousands of islands, is a relative newcomer to the list of popular tourist destinations for British holidaymakers. Along the southernmost part of its shores is the picturesque area known as the Dubrovnik Riviera. This gentle, rocky coast abounds with natural bays, and the hinterland is scented with a mixture of pine and olive groves, vineyards and Mediterranean undergrowth which fills the air with its distinct fragrance. Without doubt the jewel of this Riviera's crown is the magnificent old walled city of Dubrovnik itself; steeped in historical, architectural and artistic treasures and boasting spectacular Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains within its pedestrianised, cobbled lanes.

Join us for a superb Croatian getaway to the 'pearl of the Adriatic' which includes flights and transfers, choice of 3 star hotel with breakfast and dinner, a guided walking tour of the old town, and Croatian magic as standard.

Cavtat is a most attractive small town (pop.1500) on the southernmost tip of the Dubrovnik Riviera. The modern part of the town has grown up on the Adriatic shore, but the historic part of Cavtat sits astride a peninsula with the hilly old town on one side and a palm–fringed bay with sheltered beaches in all shapes and sizes on the other, all separated by scented cypress forest.

The old town harbour boasts a tree–lined promenade with lively bars and restaurants and as you head uphill through the creamy–coloured streets you'll find a host of attractive architecture in both Renaissance and Gothic styles: the Rector's palace, fortifications, the city walls, St. Nicholas' church, the church dedicated to Our Lady of Cavtat and the Franciscan monastery. A stroll through the woods will take you to the other side of the peninsula where there are several beaches nestled in rocky coves. Some have beach bars tucked away in the cypress trees, and one or two have umbrellas and sunloungers for hire, but if you're lucky you may be able to find a tiny intimate cove all to yourself.

It's easy to get to Dubrovnik from Cavtat; the local bus takes about 30 minutes, and there are trips available by boat too.

Mlini is a lovely little village 11km to the south of Dubrovnik, set in dense greenery around a pretty harbour and snug against the foothills of the Dinaric Alps, close to the border of Bosnia–Herzegovina. Formerly Molina, the village gets its name from the flour mills which drew their power from the Zavrelje river. There are broad shingle beaches, promenades and secret coves to explore, along with parks and flower gardens and historic and cultural sites. The ancient churches of St Roko and St Duh are particularly worth a look, as are the various Roman and Greek artefacts, and there are plenty of good walks, while the highly energetic can try cycling, tennis, windsurfing, parasailing, diving and jet–skiing. There are regular buses into Dubrovnik (fare around €1.5) and boats out to the islands in the bay.

Later in the day you will be transferred from your hotel to Dubrovnik where there will be a guided walking tour of the old town. Our expert guide takes you through the narrow streets for the best views of the old walled city while introducing you to the history and culture. Dubrovnik is rated as one of the 10 best medieval walled towns in the world, and now also known to millions of fans of the TV series Game of Thrones.

Things to look out for include: a fine Natural History museum; Mount Srđ with panoramic views from the top and a cable car to take you there; a Cathedral that contains numerous holy relics including, they say, one of Christ's nappies; a Dominican monastery with beautiful Gothic cloisters; a Franciscan monastery with Europe's oldest still–working pharmacy; the 16th century arcaded customs house of Sponza Palace, which is Europe's second oldest synagogue, and the house of Marin Držić, Croatia's most famous playwright. Montenegro WednesdayAn early start today (around 7.30am) for our full-day excursion to Montenegro. It's actually just an hour's drive from Dubrovnik, and we'll be touring some of its gorgeous plunging coastline around the Kotor Bay area. We'll stop in the medieval town of Kotor, before driving inland up into the mountains through Cetinje, once the seat of Montenegrin rulers, and the town of Budva, and ancient settlement and now a lively tourist resort. We return to your hotel in time for dinner.
Elaphite Island Cruise
We embark on our galleon cruise around three of the most beautiful islands of the Dubrovnik archipelago: Koločep, Lopud and Šipan, together known as the Elaphite islands (elaphos - Greek for deer, not elephant!). The air on the islands is sweet with citrus aromas from the orange and lemon orchards, and you can also find olives, figs, vines, carob, almond and pomegranite trees. There are lovely beaches and picturesque old villages with seaman's houses and little votive churches. We'll visit all three islands with lots of time to explore, and enjoy a lunch of grilled fish and wine while being entertained by local musicians.
NOTE: casual clothing and swimwear is recommended.
Excursions are pre-bookable with Omega Holidays at £45 per person per excursion at time of booking or before departure. If booked in resort ONLY KUNA or CREDIT CARDS are ACCEPTED as payment for excursions.
